My favorite dog books
All my life, I have been an avid reader. You’re more likely to find me curled up on the couch reading a book, then sprawled out watching a TV show. When I was younger, I dreamed of owning a home with a library. I started a collection of books as a kid and couldn’t wait to display them on bookshelves.
But as I got older, I realized that while I do love books, I didn’t want a huge collection like I once thought I did. In preparing to move from PA to FL, I found it easier to part ways with some of my possessions than to drag everything I owned with me. So often, I read a book once, but never go back and re-read it. Ultimately, they were just sitting on a shelf collecting dust.
But I did keep a small selection of books, ones that I have re-read, and will reference from time to time. These are stories that have stayed with me long after I finished reading the last page. With limited storage in our FL home, I’m very choosy about which ones made the cut.
Most of my library is comprised of photography books. Some are business books. And of course, some involve dogs. Here is a list of my 4 favorite dog related books.
1.The Art of Racing in the Rain
Made into a movie, if you haven’t read or see the film, this is a must for the next rainy day. But, I must warn you, be sure to have a box of Kleenex nearby. Told from a dog’s point of view, it’s a heartwarming story about love, loss and friendship. I read the book and watched the movie and loved them both.
2. A Dog’s Purpose
If you ever wondered whether dogs serve a purpose in our lives, then you’ll love this story. Another book, turned into movie, it’s an emotional tear jerker showcasing the deep bond between dogs and the people who love them. Anyone who has ever loved a dog will love this story.
3. Marley and Me
A story so relatable, you might feel it was written about your family! Covering the ups and downs of adulthood, you’ll laugh and cry. Whether you agree that Marley is the world’s worst dog, or you think you have the worst dog, one thing is true, these dogs bring out the best in all of us.
4. The Forever Dog Life
I recently discovered The Forever Dog and pre-ordered a copy of The Forever Dog Life before it was released. The first book made that much of an impression on me. After losing my golden girl Izzy just shy of 13, I started to wonder why our dogs don’t live as long as they used to. It’s not a simple answer, but I learned some things that really opened my eyes. Enough that I made some lifestyle changes because of it. For me and my dogs.
